Winds were light out of the west this morning.  Nick was the one paddling out early to catch some uncrowded waves this morning, but some boats pulled up because of the good conditions here so it got a little busy a little early.  The winds backed down not long after that and the boys made a Bankvaults run.  I had to stay around and get some things ready for some new guests that were arriving today, so I had to give it a miss.  So of coarse they scored!  Amen said that it was 4 to 5 feet (yeah, he's from Hawaii), with some 6 foot bombs.  Looking at the pictures, I'd say he may have been on the conservative side!  Those bastards!  Scored without me again!  The winds went west again later in the day so that pretty much left us with a 4 Bobs afternoon.  The swell seemed to be winding down so we are expecting smaller surf tomorrow.  But not for long.

Winds were light this morning and it was hard to tell which way it was going to come up.  Our swell was at least as big as it was yesterday afternoon, a little overhead on the sets.  Our doctor on call right now is Larry, and he paddled out to 4 Bobs not much after light to get a solo session in.  Turned out to be a very good call, getting his fill of waves before anyone else got out there.  We were hoping the winds were going to come up out of the south so we could hit Hideaways, but we were kind of taking our time getting ready so we could see some signs of what the wind was really going to do.  We finally got the boat together and were going to give Hideaways a look, but as we got to 4 Bobs we could see there was some west in the wind that was coming up, so we decided to play it safe and get a "safety session" in at 4 Bobs while there was no one out before we took a chance going anywhere else.  Turned out to be a good call.  A couple of boats ended up in our area and they told us nothing was looking good except 4 Bobs with the southwest winds.  There got to be a few people in the water with those boats around, so we decided to grab some lunch.  4 Bobs is fun but we are all ready for a little more juice, so when we thought we felt a little north wind coming we made a mad dash to Bankvaults.  But no luck.  Straight west wind now, and pretty strong at that.  Rifles?  We gave it a shot.  Surfed it for a little while with good conditions, but the shoulder high sets that were rolling in once in a while just were not connected, or even barreling much with the high tide.  Back to 4 Bobs!  Surfed it the rest of the afternoon with really good conditions and still a little overhead on the sets, but still one boat around.  Looking for a little smaller surf tomorrow.

Winds were light out of the south this morning and there was not much sign of our new swell so there was not any burning desire to start grabbing the surfboards, but as the morning went on we could see bigger and bigger sets starting to come in.  We had one boat take off to take a look at waves that take a south wind and they did not have to go far to find some one.   Hideaways had a wave and conditions were good.  Sets were a little over head and the bigger ones were coming in more and more.  Our second boat took off a little later and they ended up at Hideaways as well.  The waves were a little on the inconsistent side and the midday sun was a little intense, so the crew came back for some lunch earlier than usual for this group.  The big shrimp we were having may have had something to do with that as well!  After lunch we went back to Hideaways hoping for an increase in the swell.  Although it looked fun, there were quite a few guys out.  There is a few more boats in the area than normal.  We are probably paying our statistical dues for having so few boats around the past month or so!  Anyway, the wind was starting to go a little west as well, with the probability that it would go more west as the afternoon wore on, so we decided to go back and surf 4 Bobs.  There were a few guys on it, but we waited for them to get a little more tired and for the winds to get better, and that's exactly what happened.  The winds got more west and the crowd thinned out and we were on it!  Waves were maybe a little overhead on the sets and the conditions were good.  Amen was taking pictures and we got a ton of waves.  Surfed until dark.  Looking for a little increase in the swell tomorrow.

Winds were out of the northwest this morning and the swell was a little smaller.  Our first boat left for Nipusi, hoping there was more north than west in that wind.  Conditions ended up being pretty nice over there and the surf was clocking in at 2 feet overhead or so on the good sets.  The winds did a sudden about face around mid morning and started blowing from the southeast so the guys cut their session short and headed back for some lunch.  Our second boat took off at lunchtime.  We took our hamburgers to go and went to Beng Beng, trying to take advantage of the low tide and favorable southeast winds blowing at the time for that spot.  The waves were a little on the small side, about chest to shoulder high, but it was fun and there was nobody out.  We were not far into our surf session though, when the wind did another about face and started blowing out of the northwest again!  Errrrrrrr.  We pulled anchor and went back to Nipusi where it had turned offshore and was still overhead.  We met up with our third boat there and some stayed with that boat to surf Nipusi while the others left on our boat to go back and surf 4 Bobs.  Both groups had a lot of fun because the wind got really light and conditions were epic at both spots later in the afternoon.   Looking for some signs of a new swell starting so show tomorrow.

Back from a few day stay in Padang taking care of some business and hanging out with my gal.  I came out with Karina Petroni and three other guests.  They say there was some fun waves while I was gone.  The swell came up a bit yesterday and they were surfing some overhead Nipusi and Bankvaults, and one guest said he even got a few waves at Rifles.  Saw some pictures of Jevon making some sick turns at Nipusi.  MAN that guy can surf!  Today was only a bit smaller. The winds were out of the northwest this morning, then turned straight north and got a bit strong around mid day.  The crew surfed Nipusi all morning, the old guests surfing it early by themselves with the new guests taking the second shift.  It was overhead and offshore.  One guest surfed Rifles and said he had to wait a long time for waves, but got one good barrel out of the deal so it was worth it.  In the afternoon, the wind backed down and the crew had an afternoon surf at Nipusi again, where it was only a little smaller than this morning, but still glassy and fun.  A few of the guys went out to 4 Bobs  There was not too many waves, but when they came in it was really clean and fun.  Sets were about shoulder high.  Expecting smaller surf tomorrow.

I don't think I've ever had so much fun, yet felt like I got the short end of the stick as much as I did today!  The swell was looking good this morning.  Two or three feet overhead at 4 Bobs and super glassy.  Both our boats were taking off to look for the best spots, but I had not finished handing out the payroll to our staff so I told them to leave without me.  After I was done with that I walked back to the restaurant to get something to eat and I could see that 4 Bobs was looking really fun and nobody was out.  I woofed a little food down and got out there.  The wind was coming up ever so slightly out of the southeast and that was crumbling the lips a little bit, but he faces were glassy and I was getting two or three good top turns per wave.  At least as good as I can do them.  Most waves were head to two feet over, and there was the occasionally plus. I would take the second or third wave of the set and watch two or three more go by while I was paddling out. It was almost a sin to see so many fun waves go by with nobody on them.  It didn't take too long before my arms were shot from getting so many waves, and by then the wind had come up a little stronger so I headed for shore.  I was feeling pretty good about my session, but then one of our boats came back and told me about the waves they had been getting.  They went to Hideaways and it was two or three feet overhead and offshore and barreling with nobody out.  They had tales of tube rides, broken boards, and skin left on the reef.  And, of coarse, then came the obligatory, "you really missed it!"  So I go back to work, mumbling a little under my breath, and as I come back for lunch the boys are heading out again.  "Kandui's is going off!", they said.  We were having shrimp for lunch that were probably the biggest I've ever seen in my life and the tide was looking a little low to me for Kandui's, so I passed and said I'd catch up with them in a bit.  I ate those shrimp until I was about to pop and let the tide come in.  I grabbed my board and, just as my feet touched the sand, I felt the wind switch to south, with even a little west in it.  Nooooooooo!  The guys came back within minutes after the wind switch and I had to hear it again.  "You really missed it!"  Two to three feet overhead again, perfect conditions, no one out, and barreling down the reef.  I had to hear the tales again of deep barrels, long barrels.....  Bastards!  So I spent the rest of the afternoon back out at 4 Bobs, which handles that kind of wind, and a few of the guests came out as well and we had a great time surfing overhead waves until the sun went down.  No one else out but us.  Our photographer had a little slide show of the waves today at Hideaways and Kandui's, and you know what?  I really missed it!  Looking for the waves to wind down a little tomorrow.

Nobody was scrambling for their boards this morning.  It was looking pretty weak out there.  About as small as yesterday, but nice and glassy with light variable winds.  It didn't take long, though, to start seeing little sets trickle onto the reefs.  The boys started twitching a little bit so they jumped in the boats to go see what was up.  Our photographer and long time resident of Kandui, Amen, led the way.  First stop was Burgerworld.  It was already getting a little big for that spot, two or three feet overhead, but our guests had a lot of fun.  The swell was getting even bigger so they pulled anchor and went to Nipusi.  Waves there were getting overhead as well and the boys were having fun again.  Jevon surfed solo out at Bankvaults. It was heavier out there and he ended up breaking his board, but not before getting some good ones.  The tide was rising and the swell was still building so the boys pulled anchor again and checked out Hideaways.  It was head high there with some waves going a little bigger.  They hit the water for the third time and scored some more until a little squall formed out of the west and blew it out.  Good excuse to get back and eat!  Meanwhile, I was at the resort taking care of a few things, but I had one eye on the ocean.  4 Bobs was a little bigger everytime I looked at it.  Glassy too and no one out.  Some government people came by and as I was talking to them I was looking over their shoulders out at the ocean watching overhead barrels...yeah barrels!...spinning down the reef at 4 Bobs.  The government guy's boat barely got off the beach and I was running for my board!  Me and Kalian, one of our boat drivers, grabbed a dingy and we were out there.  Yeah, out there just in time to have that squall come run us over and blow hard side shore winds our way!  Rats!  Lucky for us it didn't last long and we ended up having a great time, along with many of the guests who filtered out there after they ate.  A cool sight was a sampan going by with 5 or 6 of our workers heading out to John Candy's .  It was well overhead, offshore, nobody out, and sets just keep pouring in out there.  I knew there was probably only two of that bunch that could maybe handle it, but the rest were giving it a go, trying to take it to the next level.  It was probably the best surf some of them had ever been in.  So cool to see them charging like that.  They all came back alive!  Looking for even bigger surf tomorrow.

Looking nice and glassy this morning as I got up, but it didn't take long before a west wind started to blow.  Our first boat took off looking for surf just after it started and didn't like what they were seeing condition wise, so they ended up coming back and surfing 4 Bobs.  It was around shoulder high and really fun when a big one came in.  The second boat left not too long after the first, but by the time they got to Nipusi the winds had gone more northwest and conditions were not bad there.   They surfed there all morning and had fun.  One more guest (Jevon, a return guest) and I took a third boat up to Last Resorts.  It had enough north in the wind for it to have good conditions and the waves were going a couple of feet overhead.  It was a little tough finding one that connected,  but nobody was out and we ended up getting a few fun ones.  The afternoon crew went back to Nipusi where conditions were still good.  There were a few people on it, but our guys got some good ones.  A few of the guests that stuck around the resort went out to 4 Bobs where it was still shoulder high and good conditions, although it was getting inconsistent.  Looking for the surf to drop a little more tomorrow.

It was a transition day today with our new guests arriving this morning and our old guests leaving this evening.  We had two pretty big groups so we were at maximum capacity for a few hours.  We had four boats standing by for everyone.  Two boats left with our old guests early in the morning, then the two others left later after our new guests checked in and had some breakfast.  Conditions were good with light and variable winds all day, mostly going light south the second half of the day.   And, although the swell was decreasing, there was still plenty of surf to go around.  One of our boats ended up at Hideaways where it was still a couple of feet overhead and glassy.  Only a couple of other guys out.  Another ended up at Beng Beng.  The guys had many good sessions there this past week so they were stoked to get one last good session in with nobody else out.  A boat load of our new guys went to Bankvaults and Nipusi where it was double overhead and OK conditions with the light south winds.  Our last boat ended up at Kandui's.  I haven't mentioned that spot for a while!  It woke up today with waves coming in a couple of feet overhead and glassy conditions with nobody else out.  Being the wave that it is, of coarse there were some nice barrels.  Sam, the best surfer on the trip, got some really nice tubes.  It was his best session on the trip and he would go home with a smile on his face.  The rest of the day we spent surfing 4 Bobs, John Candy's, and Karambat left; all the spots that are closest to the resort, where it was still head high and good conditions prevailed.  The rest of the guys spent the afternoon drinking free Bintang  during happy hour (a transition day treat) and getting to know each other before our old guests took off after an early dinner.  Expecting the swell to drop further tomorrow.

It was a tough day to be a surf guide!  The forecasts were calling for bigger swell today and we were all amped.  But a storm pasted through last night and left the ocean with a lot of morning sickness and a lingering light west wind.  We made an attempt to look for surf early, but it was clear to see once we got out of our protected little zone that we would find no clean surf, so we made a U turn and spent the morning surfing 4 Bobs.  It wasn't bad.  A little overhead and glassy.  It was probably the only wave around that wasn't getting all the leftover storm chop.  After that, we were keeping our eye on the wind and hoping for something to happen.  Suddenly, the winds went east and we were all grabbiing our boards.  Both boats left together and we checked out Hideaways.  The ocean had cleaned up and we saw a really nice set just as we pulled up, glassy and a couple of feet overhead.  It was looking a little heavy so one boat took off for Beng Beng while we stayed.  We were in the water about 10 minutes and the winds switched north!  We stuck it out for a while, but lunch started sounding like our best option so back we went.  Beng Beng can handle a north wind somewhat well so our second boat found some fun surf there.  They stayed for their usual long session and returned to the resort around 3.  We made another attempt at finding some surf in the afternoon, but that funk was still in the water making just about everywhere look unappealing.  Beng Beng looked pretty fun and I'm sure you would have been stoked to surf it, but our crew looked at the side/offshore head high waves and decided to pass.  I said, "you guys are officially spoiled!".  They had to aggree.  We ended up surfing Pitstop for a change of pace.  Shoulder high plus and decent conditions.  We didn't stay out that long.  Wanted to get back buy happy hour!  Hoping for better conditions tomorrow and for our swell to hang in there.

The waves out front didn't look a lot different than it did yesterday.  Pretty small. But the forecasts were calling for a good dose of west in this newest swell and, sure enough, as we left the playgrounds area in the boat early this morning we could see little lines coming into Baby Kandui's.  Kalian was sitting on the nose of the boat as we passed by and he gave me the thumbs up, knowing we would find some good surf.  First stop was Hideaways.  We saw a couple of head high plus waves there, but it had a little morning sickness so we moved on hoping to get something better. E-Bay wasn't pulling in lot of the new swell so we pushed on to Beng Beng.  The waves were a little overhead there and it was looking fun.  Light, variable winds and no one was out again.  (We have not seen a charter boat in days!)  We surfed for a couple of hours and the waves keep getting bigger and bigger.  When a 8 wave or so set rolled in 3 feet plus overhead, we decided to look to see if anything else was beginning to work.  E-Bay was looking glassy and empty, but it still didn't look like it was getting enough swell.  We went back to Hideaways and we could see the backs of the waves from quite a distance, complete with the offshore spray.  We were pretty amped when we arrived to see waves 3 feet plus overhead with glassy conditions.  Our second boat was there.  They had already surfed for hours and were back on the boat enjoying some snacks and drinks.  We jumped out and surfed until the early afternoon.  The winds came up west then and it was just the excuse we needed to go get some lunch.  The winds stayed west the rest of the day so we stuck around the resort.  Some went to 4 Bobs, some John Candy's, and me and Sam actually tried to get a couple out at Rifles.   (Too small.)  4 Bobs was the best wave around with shoulder high waves and perfect conditions.  There was surfing going on until nightfall.  Expecting the waves to get even bigger tomorrow.

It was pretty much looking like a Burgerworld day as it got light enough to see 4 Bobs this morning.  Pretty small out there.  The first boat headed straight there.  Conditions were good with a light northwest wind blowing and the waves were a couple of feet overhead.  It was a little disorganized, but no one was out and we it was looking fun.  We surfed for a few hours, then our second boat showed up.  They had just surfed Beng Beng by themselves.  Waves there were fun, but inconsistent so they came to see what Burgerworld was looking like.  We let them take over and went back for some lunch.  They said the waves got a little better after we left, and they didn't show back up to the resort until late in the afternoon, as usual!  We mostly kicked back in the afternoon, saving our energy for the upcoming swell.  A couple of our guys went out to 4 Bobs which was had too good of conditions to pass up with the moderate northwest winds.  They got a couple of chest high waves out there.  We are looking for increasing swell tomorrow.

Woke up to cloudy sky's (thank god, my lips are so sunburned) and a glassy sea this morning.  The swell was looking a little smaller.  The first boat took off a little after sunrise and headed for Nipusi/Bankvaults area.  The tide was pretty high so Nipusi was looking a little fat and the winds started coming up out of the south so they kept going and ended up at Beng Beng.  Waves were still head high plus there, the conditions were good, and nobody was out.  Good combination!  Our guys surfed there for a good while then headed back to the resort for lunch.  The second boat left around 8 or so and went to Burgerworld.  The swell was still a little big for there with clean up sets and a lot of wide ones, but everyone had fun.  There was nobody out there as well and the conditions weren't too bad with those light south winds.  After that, the boys had some energy left so they made a stop at E-Bay and got some shoulder high waves before the tide got too low.  No one else out there as well.  Our north San Diego crew STILL had energy (they had packed a lunch) so they went to Beng Beng for the low tide session.  They didn't pull in to the resort until around four.  Our afternoon boat, which wasn't very full with everybody being so surfed out, set out for Beng Beng.  The winds had switched to the north so their surf there was cut short there, but they got Nipusi on the way back where it was offshore with nobody out again.  No boats around right now.  Very nice!  Looking for the surf to drop a little more tomorrow.

We had an early surf mission planed so I was up in the dark getting ready.  It was pouring rain, lighting, rolling thunder, the whole nine yards.  I thought we might have to delay our departure but as the sun starting sending light to the horizon I could see the storm was passing behind us and we would have sunny sky's.  The high clouds that were around started turning red and orange and the storm was behind us now, still throwing lighting bolts around which was turning the whitewash at 4 Bobs an electric blue.  And with those red and orange clouds as a back drop, it was an awesome sight. So cool.  Anyway, the boys got up a little late due to the rain but we got out of here fairly early and headed to Hideaways.  The swell was still hanging in there at 2 or 3 feet overhead on the best sets and the winds were blowing offshore from the southeast at about 10mph or less.  There was a only a couple of guys out from Wavepark, but they went in pretty quick and we had the place to ourselves.  We surfed for 2 or 3 hours.  We had gotten a lot of waves and burned out quick.  The second boat headed out about 8 and went straight to E-Bay.  They surfed it by themselves for hours.  There were some other guys around, but they were satisfied with Pitstop.  The waves were still shoulder to head high and the conditions were good.  As the tide got lower they packed it up and took the short trip to Beng Beng where nobody was out again and the waves were even better that yesterday.  They surfed for hours again and didn't get back to the resort until 4 in the afternoon!  8 hours they were out!  Just about as they were pulling in, we were headed out again. The winds had just switched north so we were thinking Nipusi would be fun.  We were right!  The winds were offshore and the waves were a couple or feet plus overhead.  There was 4 guys out when we got there, but they bugged out shortly after.  Surfed until dark and enjoyed some cold Bintang on the ride home.  Expecting decreasing swell tomorrow.

5 guests left last night and they were replaced with 6 more arriving first thing this morning. The first boat left this morning with our old guests while our new guests settled in.  The first stop was Hideaways.  The swell had picked up a little overnight out of the southwest and there was some head high plus sets with good conditions.  Winds were out of the east at about 10+ .  The second boat left a little later and we showed up at Hideaways also.  We could see there were good waves, but there was another boat on it besides our guys and we could see another one coming, so we decided to look for something else.  We went E-Bay.  At first it didn't look like much, but conditions were good with nobody out.and we had seen the waves at Hideaways so we just paddled out, half at E-Bay and half at Pitstop. Good call!  Waves started coming in at about heat high at E-Bay and a little smaller at Pitstop.  After a couple or hours or so of having the place to ourselves, our other boat showed up.  (The tide was getting low at Hideaways.)  We were ready for something else so we let them have it and refueled with some snacks and drinks then made the short trip over to Beng Beng to take a look at the waves there.  We were pretty stoked to see nobody out and some slightly overhead surf coming in.  We surfed until just about everyone was exhausted, not wanting to leave good surf with nobody out.  But our stomachs were on empty and we were ready for some rest.  In the afternoon some of the guys went out at 4 Bobs where it was glassy and shoulder high and nobody out.  I talked 3 guys into going to Hideaways to catch the incoming higher tide.  We were stoked to see nobody out as well and super good conditions.  The waves were a little bigger than in the morning a little more powerful.  I lost count of how many tubes Sam had.  He got one that he said was the best tube he had had in a long, long time.  I'm always stoked when I hear that kind of thing, which is pretty often around here! Hoping the swell will stay at least the same size for the morning boat.

Sorry for the absence!  So much work going on over here lately and I just got overwhelmed. We haven't had any epic surf these last few days, but it has been fun.  Burgerworld has been a regular stop and 4 Bobs has been consistently giving us waves.  Today was pretty much more of the same.   There was an east wind blowing around 10 mph this morning and the swell didn't look like too much to get excited about, maybe chest high sets at 4 Bobs.  After breakfast we headed to Beng Beng, hoping we could get a little swell in there knowing it would be clean with the east winds.  But not much was making it in there so we went to Burgerworld.  The winds were not  the best for it either, but there was still some fun, overhead waves.  Later that morning, we had 6 new guests arrive.  After they settled in they grabbed a boat and went to Nipusi.  The wind was not the best for that spot either, but it was good enough for the first surf of their trip.  Waves were overhead and nobody was around. In the afternoon, everybody that wanted to surf were content to surf 4 Bob. The rest conserved their energy, hoping for bigger surf to fill in tomorrow.
