Light southeasterly’s were blowing again this morning.  The swell looked about the same out front, but after we had a look at the west facing reefs we could tell it was a little bigger out of the west.   Our first boat went to Beng Beng.  The conditions were looking good over there and no one was around.  The guys packed a lunch and stayed until late afternoon!  The waves were head high on the sets and super fun.  Our second boat went to Hideaways.  The waves there were a little overhead and clean as well.  Still only 2 boats in the area and the guys are super mellow, so we are still happy with the crowd factor around here.  Hoping for bigger waves tomorrow.

There were light southeasterly’s blowing this morning and we were still seeing some good sets at 4 Bobs.  The swell was coming in more from the south so the waves out front were about the same size as yesterday, even though our latest swell was fading.  There was actually some good, overhead sets at Rifles, but the wind wasn’t cooperating.  Our first boat headed around to Beng Beng where conditions were really good.  The waves were overhead and no one was out, so it was no problem when our second boat showed up there as well.  Plenty of waves to go around.  Our new guests arrived on the island later, so we sent them out on a third boat.  They hit Bankvaults.  It had some size, probably 3 feet overhead or so, and there was no one out there either.  The winds were not perfect for it, but it was plenty fun.  After their session there, they were still frothing since it was their first day, so they went to Beng Beng as well.  Their timing was good as our other boats were just getting out, so they had it to themselves.  They surfed until well into the afternoon.  4 Bobs was the only thing anyone had the energy for late in the afternoon.  It was still showing some head high sets and no one was out there either.  One charter boat showed up today and was surfing fun Hideaways, but they are going back to Padang tonight.  It’s been super uncrowded lately.  I hope we can keep that up!  Looks like a new swell will show up tomorrow.  Not big, but good period, so we will see!

This morning started out as predicted.  Sunny and glassy.  No charter boats again today.  We have only seen 2 charter boats in 4 days!  I would like to keep that streak going.  The boys were a little slow getting up because of all the hours they spent surfing yesterday.  Rifles had a wave today.  It was smaller than yesterday, but there were still some fun sets.  Four Bobs was fun as well and some of the guys surfed out there too.  Nipusi was looking good, but we were a little late in getting there because a storm that formed and came in out of the west and blew it out right after we arrived!  The second half of the day was not as predicted.  West winds and rain, turning to south winds and rain.  Right around dusk the wind stopped and 4 Bobs was looking really good, but the crew was too deep into Happy Hour Bintang to change course by then!  We are probably looking at smaller surf tomorrow, but hoping for better conditions.

I woke up early this morning.  There was only a little color of orange and red on the horizon, but I could see that it was glassy and the waves were bigger out front than yesterday.  I had a cup of Joe while waiting for more light.  By the time the caffeine had kicked in, we could see that Rifles had a wave!  A couple of us jumped in the dingy and headed out.  It was inconsistent, but glassy, and the sets were a couple feet overhead and barreling!  Unfortunately for me, I got a long barrel on my second wave but didn’t make it.  I had so much speed when I fell that the impact broke my eardrum.  Bummer!  It wasn’t the blood and pain that I was bummed on, it was the fact that the waves were firing and I had to sit it out!  This was one of those magical days that ever spot had a great wave!  Our guys got good waves everywhere from Karambat Left to Kandui’s to Beng Beng’s to Bankvaults to Ebay and Pitstops….  Everywhere had great conditions and swell!  It was a little more south than yesterday so Bankvaults was smaller than yesterday afternoon, but Rifles was bigger so that made up for it!  And the kicker was, the only charter boat that was around yesterday headed back to Padang so the entire area was empty!  Just a few guys at Wavepark to share the 10 spots or however many we had going on today.  It was an amazing day for surf.  I will try to gather up some pictures and show them to you.  A picture is worth a thousand words, eh?  We are expecting dropping swell tomorrow, but there is a couple of more swells on the charts and the conditions are forecast to be good as well.  I need to heal up quick!

Leilani and Stephanie had to catch the plane out of here today along with the photographers Russ, Matt, and John.  So, of course, the sun came out, the wind stopped, and the swell increased!  Murphy’s Law.  Our first boat went to Bankvaults.  The waves were overhead and conditions were good.   There were only a handful of other people out as there is only one charter boat in the entire North Mentawaiian chain right now!  Our guys surfed it for hours straight, getting shacked and having a great time.  Our other boat surfed Ebay which was a little overhead and fun as well, but Bankvaults was definitely the place to be today.  I had to go with the gang to the airport to make sure things went well, so I didn’t get back until mid afternoon.  I was frothing to go surfing after hearing all the reports about how good the waves were and because I probably had only caught about 1 wave in the last week because the weather was so bad, but everyone was too tired after surfing all day long.  Finally, I had to just grab a boat driver and go myself!  When I got to Bankvaults, I couldn’t believe my eyes!  Perfect conditions, no one out, and the swell had increased and was double overhead!  I headed straight out!  It wasn’t too long before one of my partners, Jordan, showed up with a couple of his friends and we shared the freight trains that were coming through.  The waves were top notch, and there were about 10 waves or so that came through that were about as good as Bankvault’s gets.  Maybe as good as anywhere gets!  Bankvaults is so underrated.  If you were lucking enough to get one of those, you were getting a trophy case barrel!  I was lucky enough to get two of them, and one of them was the best barrel I’ve gotten in maybe 8 or 10 months or longer.  And I live out here!  A+ Bankvaults.  And there were only a handful of guys to share it.  Unfortunately, we only have one picture and it was by far the worst wave I caught.  Our boat driver Andy, who surfs and rips, was taking the pictures and he couldn’t take the pain of seeing waves like that while sitting on the boat.  He just paddled by muttering something about “low bat”.  Who could blame him!  We are probably looking at good conditions again tomorrow and maybe even bigger swell.

We woke up to rain again this morning.  The wind was blowing as well, but a little more out of the north than yesterday.  Our first and, after a while, second and, in the afternoon, third boat all went to Nipusi. It was a little bigger than yesterday, but every boat in the area was on it.  There was just nothing else going on.  We went out for a while and got a few waves, but it was not an epic day by any means.  We have our three pro woman surfers, Stephanie, Karina, and Leilani all staying here and, like bees to honey, now we have a boat load of pro guys and a boat load of top ASP big wigs at our bar partying with them tonight.  Looking like some big bar bills!  Maybe this is the surf sacrifice we need to get things turned around!

The wind was blowing out of the north this morning, with maybe a little west in it.  Our little swell was dropping, but there were still a few overhead sets at Bankvaults.  It was fun there, but not what we have been accustomed to these last couple of weeks.  I think I took more pictures of the sea eagle that was circling us that I took of the surf!  Our other boat took the girls, Stephanie, Leilani, and Karina over to Burgerworld.  It was overhead and fun over there and I they got some good pictures out of the deal. Looking at probably dropping surf tomorrow.  Yikes!

Sorry for the gap in surf reports!  Our internet was down for a couple of days due to some part going haywire in Malaysia or something.  At least that is the story they are giving us!  Anyway, we have had some pretty good surf.  There has been some good Bankvaults and Nipusi.  Burgerworld was actually epic a few days ago as well.  Rifles turned on for about 2 hours one afternoon, but everybody was surfing somewhere else at the time so we could only look at pictures from our buddy who was out there.  Damn, that hurts!

Today, it started out pretty glassy.  There were a few waves rolling in at 4 Bobs so we figured that Bankvaults might still have some size.  We were right.  It was a little overhead and, as luck would have it, the wind came up out of the north and the tubes started throwing.  Everyone had a great time.  Some people surfed Beng Beng when the winds turned more east, and it was pretty fun as well with a few shoulder high sets rolling in.  In the afternoon, we stayed close to base.  4 Bobs was chest high with no one out, and fun with light offshores.  And a few of the guys went to Last Resort’s where there were still overhead sets and fun.  No one else out.

Our long time friend and most frequent guest, Karina Petroni, arrived today and she brought a couple of her good friends, Stephanie Gilmore and Leilani Gryde.  It will be Karina’s birthday in a few days so the girls came out to celebrate with a few barrels and some fun!

We are hoping for a little southwest swell to show up tomorrow.

We had our alarms set for 5 this morning, hoping to catch some Rifles or Kandui’s, depending on the wind.  But when the clock rang to get up, everyone heard the pelting rain and howling winds so we all slept for while longer.  Slowly, we got it together while the wind backed off.  4 Bobs was showing some size as we were drinking coffee and eating.  It was hard to get motivated knowing that probably our only choice was big, less that good conditions, Bankvaults.  We probably didn’t leave the beach until 9, then headed straight to Bankvaults.  It was a little bit funky, but plenty clean enough by that time so we jumped in.  Waves were a little bigger than yesterday and there was no one out.  We pretty much had it that way the whole morning and into the afternoon with only a couple of other guys paddling out the entire time. The conditions keep getting better and some sick waves were coming through.  One of our return guests, now surf guide, Drew said it was probably the best session he has ever had out there.  Looking at the pictures he got, that is not hard to believe!  Those that didn’t want Bankvaults surfed Nipusi, which was clean and way overhead as well, or 4 Bobs which had cleaned up from the morning and was overhead and fun.  In the afternoon, we hung close to the resort, surfing 4 Bobs, John Candy’s, and Karambat Left.  It was a really fun day for everyone!

It looked like the swell was a little bigger today out front.  The wind was blowing out of the northeast at about 5 plus mph.  We were thinking Bankvaults.  I had some work piling up on the island, so I decided to stay.  Bad call!  It was double overhead plus at Bankvaults and conditions were good.  Our guys scored big!  People were getting barreled one wave after another!  It was a little too much for some of the guys, so they went over to Beng Beng.  It was head high there and no one was out.  They had fun as well, until a big storm came in and chased everyone back to the resort.  In the afternoon, 4 Bobs couldn’t have looked any better with head high plus waves rolling through and a few of our crew got on it, but there was a boat going to Bankvaults and I wasn’t going to miss it 2 times in one day!  Unfortunately, it was still a little sick from the storm so the guys on the boat surfed Nipusi instead.  It was pretty good Nipusi.  Well overhead, glassy, and no one out.  But it wasn’t Bankvaults!  For me and our surfguide Drew, it was Bintang time.  We decided to save our energy.  Better things may be in store for tomorrow!

The wind was blowing lightly out of the south this morning.  We sent two boats out in the morning looking to see if the forecasted southwest swell had arrived.  The first boat ended up at Nipusi after seeing a boat at Hideaways.  It was overhead at Nipusi with a slight onshore wind, but no one was out and it was fun.  The second boat made a sharp left turn after seeing a waves peel across the reef at Kandui’s.  It wasn’t that big out there, only a little overhead on the sets, but it was a good taste of what it is like to surf out there for our crew who had never been lucky enough to score it.  After a short session there, we were off to Nipusi ourselves.  There was nobody out and the swell seemed to be building a bit and it was well overhead on the sets there by the time we left.  After a quick lunch, we were back in the boat and heading for Bankvaults.  It was a little lined up, but no one out and fun.  A few of the guys surfed Nipusi where it was overhead as well and no one out.  Hoping our little swell hangs around until a bigger swell arrives possibly as early as tomorrow afternoon.

We had a weather switch today.  The winds were swirling around this morning and there were thunder storms around.  No one was in a hurry to look for surf, especially because this week’s forecast showed today being the smallest day.  After a few cups of coffee though, a few guys got restless and we got a boat together for them.  As they were leaving, a particularly strong thunderstorm came through and it was windy and pouring rain, and we thought they were nuts.  But as they were pulling around to Beng Beng, they found that the winds were offshore and no one was around!  They surfed for hours and came back with ear to ear, “you missed it”, grins!  In the afternoon, the guys that missed the morning session and a couple iron men that surfed all morning, went to Bankvaults to see what was going on.  It was pretty glassy there and there was a still some swell left or our new swell was starting to show, because the sets were going 2 or 3 feet overhead.  It was a little inconsistent, but everybody caught waves and went back happy.  We are hoping for a little southwest swell to fill in tomorrow.

This report has been brought to you by Ray Wilcoxen from Kandui Resort: April 8,2008

We had a southwest wind blowing this morning.  Unusual for a morning wind, and not to good for anywhere but 4 Bobs which looked like it was maxing out at about chest high when a bomb set rolled through.  So expectations were pretty low when we left this morning, but things didn’t turn out too bad.  Hideaways was handling the wind all right and there were only a couple of guys out so some of our crew surfed the overhead waves that that spot had to offer, while most of the other guys surfed Beng Beng which was simi clean and overhead as well.  Still others surfed shoulder high Ebay and Pitstops for a while.  On the way back to the resort, many of the crew stopped and surfed Nipusi for a couple of hours.  It was onshore, but not blown out, and it was overhead as well.  So not a bad day all things considered.  Hoping the wave height will hang in there until a nice swell comes in on Friday.

There was a little wind this morning coming from the southeast.  That sounded good to us because our expected swell was to have some west in it so the lefts would have waves and be offshore.  We like that kind of thing around here!  Our first boat was out of here bright and early.  They made a beeline to Hideaways to try and get it at high tide.  The swell was there all right with waves going 2 or 3 feet overhead and only 2 or 3 other guys out.  They surfed it until the tide got low and then headed for Beng Beng where it was also overhead and fun.  There was a boat on it so there were a few people out, but it was fun and perfect for our guests that wanted a tamer wave.  Our second boat took off after a nice breakfast and we ended up at Ebay.  It was a foot or two overhead there and no one was out.  Both boats made lunches just in case we wanted to surf a lot, and that is just what we did.  The wind came up around 2 in the afternoon out of the southwest so we headed back to the resort and basically called it a day.  A pretty good day at that!  Hoping our swell will hang in there another day.

We figured this little swell forecast to come in today would be pretty small, but we were pleasantly surprised to see a little size today.  We had a father/daughter group show up  yesterday and they were up bright and early to surf some fun waves out at John Candy’s and some of the other guests got an early jump on 4 Bobs as well.  Conditions could pretty much be described as dead wind and glass, so everywhere was looking good.  One of our guests even surfed some shoulder high Rifles by himself and had a lot of fun.
A couple more went up to Last Resorts and surfed overhead waves to ourselves as well.  There have been a few charter boats around lately, but they all seemed to have moved on as we didn’t see one charter boat anywhere all day.  About mid morning we sent a boat to Bankvaults to see what was going on there.  They were stoked to see overhead waves and only Wavepark’s canoe there with a mere 3 guests on it.  They surfed until after lunchtime.  In the afternoon we sent another boat over to Bankvaults.  It looked like our swell had dropped to around head high and there was a little side shore, west wind, but it was still fun and there was nobody around so we had fun.  We all had a cold Bintang on the way back and watched a great sunset.  Probably small surf tomorrow, then things start looking up with a few swells lined up for us.

This report has been brought to you by Ray Wilcoxen from Kandui Resort: April 4,2008

It was looking perhaps a little smaller today, but not by much.  Both boats went to Nipusi where it was still overhead and fun and only one boat was around.  Some of the guys hung around and surfed 4 Bobs by themselves.  It was still pushing head high on the sets and fun, as 4 Bobs always is!  In the afternoon, everyone hung around the resort and surfed John Candy’s or went fishing again.  (Got another Wahoo!)  We had a father/daughter group arrive late afternoon, and they had time for a fun 4 Bobs session to themselves before dark.  Looking at probably smaller surf for the next couple of days, but the period may increase and direction may get a little more west so I’m sure we will still find some fun surf.

This report has been brought to you by Ray Wilcoxen from Kandui Resort: April 3, 2008

It was glassy and looking a bit bigger this morning out in front of the resort.  Our first boat hit Nupisi.  The south angle was treating it right.  Conditions were good, and there were only a couple of guys in the water.  Good session there.  Our second boat headed for Burgerworld, hoping to get it as good as yesterday, but that never happens 2 days in a row!  It was a little big for that spot and there was a lot of mushbugers coming through, but they still got some fun ones.  Everyone was content to hang around the resort for the second half of the day.  The conditions were good with light west to northwest winds and there was the occasional overhead wave rolling through.  Best of all, there were no other surfers in sight so we surfed empty John Candy’s and 4 Bobs all afternoon.  Not bad.  Looking for a repeat of today swell wise tomorrow.

This report has been brought to you by Ray Wilcoxen from Kandui Resort: April 2, 2008

We said goodbye to our first set of guests for the season this morning and our new guests flew in almost at midday.  After a quick lunch, our frothing, first day guests headed out to look for some surf.  It was the tale of 2 boats.  One went to Bankvaults and surfed empty waves.  It was a couple of feet over head and the conditions were alright.  It was better than anything you probably surfed today, but for around here it was average at best.  Our other boat went to Burgerworld.  It had several boats on it and plenty of guys in the water, but it was the best Burgerworld our surf guide or our returning guests had ever seen!  For you non-believers out there, Burgerworld can get all time!  Unfortunately, we didn’t bring the camera so we have no evidence, but our guide said he got barreled on every wave he took off on.  Good first day for our new crew!  Hoping for a little straight south swell to fill in tomorrow.
