Our new swell was starting to show this morning.   The winds were out of the south, but only lightly.   The boys were heading to look at Hideaways, but saw a set come through Rifles and made a hard right turn to go check it out.  The sets there were a little overhead and were barreling even with the light onshore winds so they got out there.   They had it to themselves and surfed for hours before the wind came up a little more strongly and they decided it was lunchtime.   The second boat went to Beng Beng.  The waves there were a little overhead with good conditions and no one was out.  They surfed for quite a while and the surf was getting a little bigger the whole time, so they decided to give E-Bay a look to see what the increasing swell was doing over there.   When they got there they saw waves coming in that were 4 feet overhead on the sets.  Conditions were perfect with the light offshore winds, and no one was out!  Some of the group were getting stand-up barrels, one after another. One of our guests had the session of his life, and he was a veteran surfer!  Our guys were very stoked when they got back to the resort.  Looking for even bigger surf tomorrow.

It was super glassy and the sun was out early this morning.  The swell had dropped some, but we were sure we would find some good surf somewhere looking at the good conditions.  Our first boat hit Bankvaults where it was still a little overhead and glassy.   The guys surfed a long time there, but they were not through.  The headed to Beng Beng after their long surf at Bankvaults and scored again.  Beng  Beng was shoulder high plus with good conditions.  The guys were out for about 8 hours before they got back to the resort! Our second boat also went to Beng Beng but returned in time for a late lunch and jet back out to Beng Beng for a second session.  Conditions were really good and there were only a few guys out.  They were very happy with their session and surfed until sundown.  Hoping for our new swell to start showing tomorrow afternoon.

The winds were blowing pretty hard out of the northwest this morning and our new swell was only just starting to show.  We had a look at Rifles but there were a few people out and it looked really inconsistent so we turned around and headed for Bankvaults, hoping the winds were not too west.  There was some size there, probably double-overhead plus, but, alas, the wind had a little too much west in it and the tubes were shutting down.  So we went back to the Playgrounds and the guys surfed 4 Bobs.  I gave Rifles a shot, but broke ANOTHER board (I think that’s 5 this month!), just going on the only wave I could get that had any size.  A storm came through in the early afternoon so we kicked back and relaxed, waiting for it to pass through.  When it did, the ocean went really glassy and you could pretty much pick where you wanted to surf.  One boat went to Hideaways.  It was well overhead there and gnarly.  Some guys went to 4 Bobs where it was a few feet overhead and peeling longer that usual for some reason.  John Candy’s was looking really good with overhead sets, but none of our guys wanted it.  One guest and myself went to Rifles where it was a little bigger than this morning and barreling if you got the right one.  We were all having fun before another storm came through and rained on our parade.  It was pretty late anyway, but it got our guys back in time to take advantage of happy hour at the bar!  Hoping our swell fills in more overnight.

The swell was quite a bit smaller this morning.  The wind was non-existent.  We ran up to Rifles to see if there was still some fun ones.  It was still overhead on the sets and it was alright, but pretty anticlimactic after yesterday’s adrenalin pumping bombs.  The winds came up out of the southeast so we got out, then some of the guys went to Beng Beng.  It was clean and a little overhead and no one was out.  Our guys had a lot of fun, but then a few guys showed up and our boat pulled anchor and checked out Pitstops.  It was head high and glassy and no one was out there either so our guys jumped out and had another fun session.  Our surf guide said it was the best Pitstop’s he had ever seen.  Our second boat ended up right next door at E-Bay.  Conditions were clean there also and it was overhead on the sets.  The guys really had a good time there and hope to get back there on this next swell.  In the afternoon everyone stuck close to the resort, surfing 4 Bobs and Karambat Left.  Not a bad day.  Hoping for our newest swell to start filling in tomorrow.

Our current swell filled in more overnight.  Winds were out of the northwest and blowing fairly strong.   4 Bobs and Karambat left were handling the winds and that is where our morning crew surfed.  4 Bobs was double overhead plus on the sets and Karambat even had some sets going a few feet overhead.  The winds backed down mid morning and started to clock around until it was blowing out of the east at 5 mph plus.  By the early afternoon Kandui was clean enough to surf and our guys were on it.  Waves were a few feet overhead and there was the occasional big bomb.  I saw some of our guests get some nice ones when I came out to drop someone off in the dingy.  I was saving my energy, hoping Rifles would clean up.  The wind ended up dying and there was just a touch of south wind in the afternoon.  With a couple of hours of light left in the day, I paddled out at Rifles.  It was glassy, but still had a bit of sickness on it from the east winds that had been blowing.  It was double overhead plus on the sets and no one was out.  It just kept getting cleaner as the afternoon wore on and a few people started to show up.  The crowd maxed at probably around 10 and there were plenty of bombs to go around if you could get into position to get one.   The take offs were pretty critical so you had to be in just the right part of the wave to get in without getting pitched.  There were some sick ones.  It was one of those afternoons that, if I had 3 wishes, I would probably have burned one of them for another couple of hours of light!  Expecting smaller surf tomorrow.

It was obvious from first light that our new swell was filling in.  4 Bobs had some nice waves coming through and the conditions were alright with the light northwest winds that were blowing.  Some of our guests got on it early to get some waves under their belt right away.  The rest of us ate a little breakfast then headed out to Rifles to see what was going on.  The wind was a little side shore, but it was still fairly glassy and there were some overhead sets so we went out.  The swell was forecast to increase throughout the day so we parked a boat next to the line up with food and drinks and stayed there the whole day.  The winds were light and variable, turning southwest in the late afternoon which is a good wind for there, and conditions really got good then.  The waves slowly got bigger hour by hour and there were some pretty sick barrels by the afternoon.  Not as good as the other day, but pretty darn good.  I saw a few sick tube rides.  I will try to get some pictures posted later.  Some of our guests surfed John Candy’s in the afternoon and said it was good fun, sets going almost double overhead.  Others surfed 4 Bobs which was overhead and pretty darn good as well.   Forecasts say bigger waves tomorrow.

The wind was out of the northwest this morning.  Our first boat headed for Bankvaults.  The winds were not ideal, but there was no one out and there were some overhead sets so they were on it.  The second boat headed to Bankvaults as well.  The conditions were improving by late morning and the waves were getting a little bigger.  Rasta got some really good barrels.  It’s funny, waves almost seem to cooperate with the really good surfers like Rasta.  The waves today seemed to open up just for him!  In the afternoon, we headed back to Bankvaults.  It was a little bigger than the morning and there was still no one out.  The conditions were still less than ideal with the west bump in the waves, but it was fun.  Looking for bigger waves tomorrow.

We said goodbye to the Billabong girls and D Hump today.  It was great hanging out with them for the last week or so.  Our other guests also left today and it was nice having them with us as well.  I don’t know what it is about this place, but just about everyone that comes here is cool.  Very nice.  Anyway, the surf wasn’t looking too good today.  There was west wind blowing again this morning, although not as strong as yesterday, and the surf was a little smaller.  Our old guests got a surf in at Nipusi  before they had to go.  It was a little overhead and a little bumpy, but there was no one out and they had fun.  Our new guests arrived midmorning and were frothing for a surf so they jumped in a boat and headed for Nipusi too, getting there just as our first boat was leaving so they had it to themselves as well.  4 Bobs was pretty clean in the afternoon and a couple of the guys surfed the chest high sets that were coming in.  We are hoping for slowly building swell tomorrow.

Woke up this morning to sunny skies and glassy seas.  It looked like there were still some waves up at Rifles so it wasn’t too long before we were in a boat and heading out.   I was surprised, pleasantly, to see that the waves were even bigger than yesterday with sets going 4 feet over head or so.  It was glassy and it was barreling!  Everybody got some good ones before the wind started to come up a bit out of the south in the late morning, blowing it out a little.  We all headed in and hoped that the wind would switch later.  We got our wish!  The wind kept clocking around more and more and by the time we finished lunch it was blowing straight offshore at Rifles!  It was only team Kandui out there just about the entire afternoon.  The sketchy, low tide may have had something to do with that, but we were getting so shacked we didn’t care.  It was one of those sessions when everyone was getting barreled on just about every wave.  2, 4, 6, 8 seconds plus in the beautiful, crisp tubes the offshore winds were producing.  Again, the Billabong girls were scoring and Rasta got some mental ones.  The lighting wasn’t so good, but D Hump got some good shots that I hope we can share with you soon.  Sick ones!  We surfed until we just couldn’t paddle into another one.  Me and Phil were the last two out.  We had to come in with about 20 minutes of light left just because we blew our last waves so badly do to exhaustion!  It was a hell of a session.  That will be enough to keep us happy until our next swell.  Expecting smaller surf tomorrow.

What happened? The swell has backed right off so it’s time to do some of the things that you do while you’re not surfing. Gary, our temporary in-house paramedic, sorts out the first aid supplies and there is a bit of wound dres sing for the guys who cleaned up and got cleaned up at Rifles yesterday. Randy is busy making ice packs for bruises while our maitre d’hotel, Ray takes the opportunity to head back to Padang for a check-up for his visibly pregnant wife, Jenny.  Speaking of which, there have been some changes since my last visit.
There is some great landscaping along the front of the umas giving light and guidance for the stagger back after a few Bintangs. Eka has been promoted to Assistant manager and there are 2 charming new girls in the bar, Deta and Rhylee. Ray’s new situation adds a domestic air to the whole resort and we can only assume that Jenny will make as good a mother as she does a hostess.  But you can’t sit at the resort all day so we head out to Beng Bengs in a fairly gusty South Easterly wind. Once again, the best surfs are the ones you get when you’re not expecting anything and once the four of us got in the water, the wind started to back off and there were some great 3’ waves shared amongst us. Tired and hungry we head back to the Resort with one of the guests successfully demolishing an entire bag of peanuts on the way.  A first perhaps?

We wake up to a very small swell indeed. But there is not a breath of wind and expectations of Nepussi being fun have us getting ready for an immediate departure. But out the front of the resort the talcum white sands of the island and the swaying fronds of the palms trees are set starkly against the black of an approaching storm. As promised the island is soon hit by the squall that brings a tropical downpour and gusty winds accompanied by peals of thunder. So it’s back to standby mode with Gary carrying out the unenviable task of sweeping the sand out of the restaurant; a job that we in Australia say is a bit like painting the Harbour Bridge in that once you’ve finished one end, it’s time to start again at the other. Some of the guests are catching up on some sleep while others are thumbing through books and magazines. Once the wind backs off we head out to Rifles where a small wave is breaking along the reef. Difficult to make but Liam and Simon pull into some very tidy barrels. Back to the resort and lunch at 4 o’clock(!) Other than an early happy-hour Bintang it doesn’t look like there’s much in the offing surf-wise.
But all the forecasts indicate the swell rising overnight so there’s lots to look forward to.

It was nice and glassy again this morning.  I’ll never get tired of writing that!  The boys were a little late getting up after all the surf they got yesterday, but it wasn’t long before the sound of waves rolling up on the beach got their attention.  We could see that there was some waves at Rifles, but it looked like it had a little morning sickness and the wind started blowing lightly from the southeast so our boat headed to Hideaways.  It was overhead there and he conditions were good.  A few guys were out, but it was not long before they took off and the crew had it to themselves.  Surfed until early afternoon.  After lunch, we could see that Rifles was going off.  The swell was hitting the reef at a better angle or the swell was pulsing or something and waves were peeling top to bottom down the reef.  I couldn’t make the boat, but our crew ran out there and scored.  The best day of the year, I was told.  It was a little heavy for some of our guests so they surfed John Candy’s and 4 Bobs instead and had a good time as well.  Expecting the swell to fade through the night.

The ocean was nice and glassy again this morning.  A quick look up and Rifles showed our swell had gotten bigger overnight.  The sets were 3 or 4 feet overhead up there and we were on it!  It wasn’t classic Rifles, probably a 5 on a scale of 1-10, but it really hadn’t broken in quite a while so it was nice just to be out there with some real water moving.  The winds came up a little from the southeast and most of our crew went to check out Kandui’s.  The swell wasn’t as big over there, probably a couple of feet overhead on the biggest sets, but conditions were good and it was still barreling.  We surfed both spots until afternoon.   The tide was pretty low in the afternoon so we surfed John Candy’s and 4 Bobs then.  Both spots were overhead and the ocean pretty much turned to oil late in the afternoon.  Very nice.  Hoping our swell will not drop too much tomorrow.

It was another day of great conditions.  Glassy all day and a south swell was beginning to fill in.  Our crew hit Hideaways first while the tide was high and got some head high plus waves.  After the tide got a little low, they headed off to E-Bay and Pitstop’s to get a few waves there before going to Beng Beng which is good at low tide.  Waves were fun where ever they went and conditions were good.  They got back for late lunch then had time to get some head high plus 4 Bobs in before dark.  Expecting our newest swell to fill in more over night.

After what seems an eternity of in-flight movies, airport terminals and transit accommodation, there is nothing quite as liberating as heading out from Padang Harbour for Kandui. Fortunately for us, but probably not for the resort, there are only 6 of us going on this trip and the night is perfect for the crossing; not a breath of wind and a whisker past the full moon. The morning sun comes up and we’re watching each swell as it passes under the boat and wondering how it might develop as it reaches Hideaways or Rifles. A quick unpack and we’re off. The surf guides tell us that the swell is small so we head to Nipussi which is clean 3~4’ and gentle on the body after the long trip. Just as we’re getting tired a slight breeze appears from nowhere so we all call it quits and head back to the resort for lunch and some time out. Late afternoon and with the light wind looking like it might be off-shore at Beng Beng we head out in that direction. The swell is so small it’s hard to pick exactly where the break is but if for nothing more than to get wet and the exercise, we head out anyway. Expecting nothing we were all pleasantly surprised when a set comes through at about 3’. Small maybe, but heaps of fun and just 4 of us out. The wind dropped back to nothing, the sun set red in the west and the 3~4’ sets continued to  break on the low tide.  Back to the resort in the dark for healthy food washed down with a Bintang or two. First day and it doesn't get much better than this. It’s good to be back.

The surf report was brought to you today by Stephen, a return and happy customer.  Pretty good, eh!
