Our current guests had to leave around noon today, so we were up early hoping to get another Kandui session before they had to go.  I took the dingy around really fast to see how it was looking, and I was surprised to see how much the swell had dropped overnight.  It was only half the size it was yesterday afternoon.  The winds seemed to be blowing lightly out of the northwest so we decided to look for some bigger surf at Bankvaults.   It was bigger, probably double overhead or so, but it was looking kind of weird so we settled for Nipusi instead.  There was no one out there and the waves were 4 feet overhead or so.  We got some fun ones before we had to head back. Nice, relaxing last session for the boys.  We said goodbye to our cool guests after an early lunch.  We have no guests on the island now so it is just the surf guides and owners for a couple of days.  We all were waiting for the afternoon high tide so we could get some Kandui’s again.  The guys were building a perch for taking pictures in from of  Kandui’s around mid afternoon, and they were seeing nice waves reeling the whole time, just frothing and waiting for the tide.  We got out there with maybe a couple of hours of daylight left.  Conditions were perfect with the light southeast winds.  There were only 2 other guys out.  Waves were inconsistent but it was a beautiful afternoon and we were content to wait for the bigger ones and just hang out and enjoy.  Watched a nice sunset followed closely by the full moon rising over the island again today.  Very beautiful.  Expecting a little smaller surf tomorrow.

It was nice and glassy this morning.  The waves looked a little bigger out front.  I took a boat around to see what Kandui was doing.  It was definitely bigger with some sets going 3 or 4 feet overhead.  The wind was light, but a little too south to be ideal so the wave was a little crumbly, but the boys were frothing for Kandui so they were on it.  Luckily for us, the winds died while we were out there and it really cleaned up.  The barrels started opening up and staying open the whole way down the line.  We surfed until almost dead low tide.  It was just too hard to leave with conditions as good as they were. Nobody got too hurt so it was all good.  We came back and ate lunch, then waited for the tide to come back up so we could go back to Kandui’s.    We got back out there around 4 o’clock.  The waves had gotten a little bigger with a couple of double-overhead sets rolling through.  The winds were a little stronger than this morning, but a little more offshore as well, then later it went super glassy.  There were some big barrels and some big wipeouts, and everybody was hooting and calling their buddies into some sick pits.  Pretty cool afternoon.  To top it off, the full moon rose over the island around the time the sunset and it had these beams of light streaming through the clouds.  Lucky we didn’t all get a set on the head checking that out!  Hoping we get some more Kandui tomorrow.

The swell dropped off a little over night.  Winds were blowing out of the south-southwest, but not very hard.  Our guys headed for Hideaways to get a few before the tide got too low.  There were still some overhead sets and the winds were not too bad.  The tide got low fast though,so the boat returned home and those that still wanted to surf went out at 4 Bobs.  In the afternoon the winds completely stopped.  Everywhere was looking glassy.  Our boat went to Hideaways to see how it was looking with the higher tide and good winds.  What they found was an almost empty lineup, perfect conditions with just a breath of offshore winds, and overhead waves.  They were taking video from the water and the boat and it was just tube after tube.  After a spectacular sunset, the boys caught their last waves and headed home.  We are hoping for bigger waves tomorrow.

Woke up this morning to the sound of bigger waves.  The wind was calm and 4 Bobs was looking glassy and fun.  We ran out there, thinking we would get a couple while the rest of the crew got it together and then we would all go to Hideaways, but while we were surfing the wind came up southwest, and fairly strong, making 4 Bobs the place to be with everywhere else being onshore with those winds.   So we hung out there and surfed the head high plus waves.  The winds stayed the same all day so it was all 4 Bobs.  Boats started to show up so it got busy from time to time, but there were plenty of waves.  The midday session only had a handful of people on it, probably due to the low tide and blazing sun, so we hardly had time to sit on our boards with all of the sets coming through.  Late afternoon the wind backed down a little and some of our crew surfed Rifles.  It still had a little lump on it from less than perfect winds all day, but there were a few head high plus sets and our guys got a few barrels.  Looking for smaller surf tomorrow.

The wind was pretty strong today out of the south.  The new swell was just starting to show so our guys went to check out Hideaways.  The tide was a little low, but it was looking to tempting with the overhead sets coming through so they were on it.  There were some good waves and a few tubes.  The crew donated some skin to the reef in thanks.  In the afternoon the tide was a little higher so our boat headed back to Hideaways.  The wind had a little more west in it, but the swell had increased and was well overhead.   Surfed until sunset.  Hoping for bigger waves tomorrow.

Our swell dropped overnight and it was looking pretty small out front.  Winds were out of the southeast.  Our first boat went to Hideaways.  Waves were pretty small over there, probably chest high max, but the conditions were good and no one was out so we gave it a go for a while.  It wasn’t too long before we were over it though, so we left to look for something a little better.  Nipusi looked fun, even with the onshore southeast winds, but there were a few guys on it so we opted for empty Bankvaults instead.  The sets there were a little inconsistent, but when they came they were one or two feet overhead and there were some fun shoulders if you could find them.  We stayed out surfing by ourselves until the midday sun drove us out.  Our second boat left after lunch and they got some good Nipusi.  It was a little smaller than yesterday, but it was standing up a little more and there was no one out.  The southeast winds backed down pretty nicely also so conditions were not bad.  Fun session.  In the late afternoon, some of our crew surfed 4 Bobs.  It was chest high or so on the sets and pretty fun.  No one else around.  Hoping for a little more swell to show tomorrow.

Winds were blowing pretty strong out of the north this morning.  The swell was looking pretty small out front so we decided to take a look at Pistols, which is a swell magnet and takes a north wind.  It was ok up there with head high plus sets rolling through and no one out, but we rolled the dice and moved on.  Nipusi looked alright, but there were a few guys on it.  It was still a little small for Bankvaults.  The wind felt like it was backing down a bit so we figured Burgerworld might be worth a look.  The winds were still less than perfect there and there were two boats and a few guys on it, but we went out anyway hoping for some good luck.  And good luck we got!  Within a half an hour everybody had gotten out of the water except for us (they had probably been out since dawn) and then the wind started backing down and the sun even came out.  The swell was also on the increase and we were getting some fun, overhead waves to ourselves.  After a few hours we were getting pretty tired and the swell was really getting too big for that spot and the wind started picking up again from the northeast, so we headed back.  But with the northeast wind and increasing swell we figured Beng Beng was worth a look on the way.  There was one boat on it when we got there and 3 guys out.   The conditions were really good and head high plus sets were coming in.  We couldn’t pass that up so we went for another surf.  Minutes later the other guys packed up, the boat left (they had already been there awhile), and we were surfing by ourselves again!  After a couple of hours of surfing, we had to go.  We had no other excuse to leave except that we couldn’t paddle anymore.  It almost felt like a sin to leave a spot overhead and building with offshore winds and nobody out, but we were toast.   Didn’t get back until late afternoon.  Looking for our swell to get a little bigger for tomorrow.

Winds were out of the north this morning, but not as strong as the last couple of days.  The swell was looking pretty small so our guys choose to avoid the possible crowd at Nupusi and went up to Last Resorts.  Good call!  Conditions were good and there were some good shaped waves and no one was out.  They surfed till about lunchtime.  We had some new guests arrive this afternoon and a couple of them had to get wet so they surfed 4 Bobs and actually got a couple of waves in the 15 minute time window they had given themselves!  Karina Petroni also arrived this afternoon with some other Vans team riders and photographers.   We are hoping to get some good waves this week for their upcoming ads.  Looking for a little something to fill in tomorrow.

Winds were blowing out of the north again this morning, but not as hard as yesterday and weather was all right.  Our guys headed for Nipusi.  There were a few guys on it because it was one of the few places working, but our guys got some fun waves in the overhead surf and had a good time.  The sun was out and it was a beautiful day until late afternoon when the rain returned.  On the plus side, the winds went a little more west also and 4 Bobs was again the call.  It was a little smaller than yesterday, but still fun.  Expecting smaller surf tomorrow, but hoping for better conditions.

The swell was looking bigger today.  But the winds were blowing pretty hard out of the northwest and it was raining, so no one was looking very interested in looking for surf.  It was one of those rare days that the weather just did not let up and we spent a lot of time hanging out in the restaurant watching a lot of video that we have taken these last big swells.  Could have been worse.  We could have been looking at the inside of a boat the whole day!  Finally the winds turned a little more west (offshore) and 4 Bobs was looking pretty good all of a sudden.  I saw a set of about 7 waves come through at about shoulder high.  Minutes later our guys were on it and they got over an hour in before it got dark.   Not a bad little session to end the day.  Looking for smaller surf tomorrow.

The ocean was really glassy this morning, but the winds came up quickly out of the north.  We were hoping our new swell would be showing today, but it wasn’t looking very promising out front.  Last Resort’s is always good for a wave and no crowds, and the winds were offshore there, so the boys (and girls on this trip) were on it.  It was about head high or so out there and it was just the 5 of them out.  They had some fun and then came in for some lunch.  Just after they came in it started pouring rain so most of us just hung out.  Our 2 new guests were frothing a little and they decided to brave the downpour and went to Nipusi.  There were a few people on it there, but our guys were just stoked to be in the warm water and beautiful location, and they ended up getting a couple of nice waves for their effort.  Hoping for that latest swell to start showing to

Waves were looking a little smaller today. The winds were light out of the east. Kandui's still had some swell showing and the conditions were pretty good so the crew decided to go out there. There was no one else out. It was a little overhead on the sets and there were some nice shoulders with the high tide and some tubes as the tide dropped. When the tide got too low, it was time to get some lunch and wait out the midday sun. The ocean was so beautiful with the sun out and the water has such a nice color, kind of a turquoise blue, but we absorbed enough sun yesterday so it was good to just cruise and enjoy the scenery. Mid afternoon the winds turned north so we went to give Bankvaults a look. There was no one out there and the conditions were good. We were on it right away! The waves were hitting 3 or 4 feet overhead on the sets and, although it was a little inconsistent, there were some good waves coming through and a few nice barrels. The winds went a little west late in the afternoon so we got out and watched a nice sunset as we were on our way back to the resort. Looking for smaller surf tomorrow.

The winds were coming out of the east this morning and was blowing pretty hard. We headed straight to Hideaways, but the outgoing tide or something was making it look a bit funky and the swell didn't seem to be getting in there like it was yesterday afternoon, so we moved on. When we got to E-Bay there were only a handful of guys out, the conditions were good, and there were some overhead sets rolling through. We surfed for a couple of hours, at least, and everyone got fun waves. By that time the tide was getting pretty low and the crowd was getting thicker, so we went to take a look at Beng Beng. There were only 3 guys out, the conditions were good, and it was even bigger there. It was actually a little too big for that spot, but we still got good waves, and the 3 other surfers got out of the water right away so we were surfing by ourselves. Not bad. In the afternoon, our boat went to Hideaways. No one was out and the winds backed off soon after they got there. The waves were well overhead again, the conditions were good, and there was only 1 guy out this time. I saw some pictures and I'm really sorry I missed that boat! Looks like they had a really good session. Looking for the swell to wind down a bit tomorrow.

Got back from Padang this morning. Our new swell was filling in throughout the day and there was a pretty stiff south wind that blew all day as well. Our guests went to Beng Beng around mid morning. It was handling the wind and the low'ish tide. There were a few other guys out, but there were a lot of waves and the swell was building so our crew had a good time. In the afternoon, we were hoping for Kandui's but the wind stayed too south. But Hideaways is not a bad second choice! Hideaways was handling the south wind well and conditions were pretty good. The swell was looking good too with waves going double-overhead plus on the sets, and 4 or 5 or more waves in a set. Because it was the best wave around this afternoon there was bit of a crowd on it, but there seemed to be a lot of people just floating around and a there were plenty of set waves for anyone that wanted one. The crowd thinned out and there were only a handful of us surfing in the late afternoon. It was a really fun session. I'm stoked to be back here in the Mentawais! Expecting the swell to slowly taper down tomorrow, but hoping for some more bombs in the morning.

The ocean was super glassy this morning. And there were just enough clouds in the sky to make for a pretty awesome sunrise. The only thing missing was a pumping swell! It was looking really small out front. Forecasts were calling for a rising swell today coming out of the southwest, so we thought there could be something on the west facing reefs. Sure enough, our guys scored empty E-Bay with good conditions. Waves were about head high and they surfed until they were beat. A boat finally turned up then and that's all the excuse they needed to head home for a late lunch. There was some talk of going to Beng Beng in the afternoon on the low tide, but everyone decided to save their energy for tomorrow. Expecting our swell to hang in there for another day.

Winds were out of the northwest this morning and light. The swell was dropping a little, but there was still plenty of water moving. 4 Bobs and John Candy's were overhead and clean and that's where most of our crew decided to surf, but a few of us headed for Bankvaults. The waves there were not much smaller than yesterday and the conditions were super clean. It seemed difficult to be in the right place at the right time, though, with the strong current from the outgoing tide pulling us up the point and into the reef. We had to keep paddling back down and dodging clean up set as we did it, but we managed to get a couple a good ones before throwing in the towel. On the way back we could see that the winds were blowing southeast at Kandui's (How that is possible with the winds blowing north at Bankvaults I don't know!), and it was super clean and overhead. Our other boat was just arriving and those that wanted it went out. They had a window of good winds and a decent tide before things deteriorated, but they got in some good tube time. Many of our guests were leaving today so they stuck close to the resort this afternoon while the new guests went to surf some well overhead, although a little onshore with the west wind that had come up, Nipusi. 4 Bobs was looking pretty epic with the west winds and shoulder high waves, so the second our departing guests left we were grabbing our boards! When that wave is that size with that kind of conditions it reminds me of one of my favorite waves in the world, Lower Trestles. It's just shorter, but you can be surfing by yourself like I was in the late afternoon today. Surfed until dark. Only 5 guests right now and the bookings for the next month are slow and the other resorts and boat operators have similar bookings from what I hear. Good time to get down here and possibly get it uncrowded! Looking for smaller surf tomorrow.

Took the dingy early this morning to check out Kandui's. Everybody had their hopes up after yesterday's amazing barrels, but the winds over there were out of the northwest and it wasn't looking that great. The winds were light enough for Rifles to have good conditions with that direction so I took a look at that also, but the swell was just too west to get in there. By the time I got back to the resort it was obvious that we were going to get run over by a storm so we all just hung out and waited to see what the weather would have for us after it passed. (The wind was going all over the place for a while.) It was getting to be late morning by the time it cleared up and that was past the Kandui tide window for the day, but just about then waves seem to be lighting up 4 Bobs and John Candy's and the winds were out of the northeast now, but not too strong. Our guys jumped out to 4 Bobs and were scoring some great, overhead waves and only our three guys out. The report from our partner Jordan, who is guiding the Aleoita right now, was that Kandui's was indeed too low a tide and wrong winds, but that hadn't kept him from getting some sick barrels before the tide became just undoable. We were thinking about checking Bankvaults and E-Bay. Both spots can handle that wind if it is not too strong, so we took off. I don't think any of us really expected to surf Bankvaults today because the swell was definitely sizeable and there were outer reefs breaking, but we thought we would take a look anyway. We waited and watched and never saw anything over 8 feet (you have to use the Hawaiian scale when the surf gets big), so we sent out our guinea pig, Taylor . After 15 minutes or so, Taylor was still alive so I decided to give it a go myself. The conditions were super clean and there was not another person in sight. Thick waves were peeling down the reef with surprisingly good shape. We were both sure we would see a 12 foot clean up set any minute and get washed to the beach (been there, done that), but it never came. Only 8 foot dream waves with no one out but us. We probably would have gotten a lot more waves and got them from deeper if we didn't have that feeling that a giant clean up set was out there somewhere with our name on it, but we managed to get a few nice ones under our belt before heading back. While we were gone, all the other guests were having fun. 4 Bobs, John Candy's, and Karambat Left were all head high plus and fun, and the light winds were making for good conditions everywhere. Some of our guests were out until it was pitch black. Looking for decreasing swell tomorrow.

Me and Wetto did the surf check on the Kandui side again this morning. This time we were making a U turn in the dingy before we even got past Baby Kandui. It was obviously bigger today as an overhead, three waves set peeled through. We got a boat together and took off shortly after I spread the news. We checked Kandui, but the light winds there were southwest and it was not looking that good, although there was some size. We pasted Bandvaults, but the backs of the waves were looking a little sizeable and the consensus was to keep moving. We looked at E-Bay, but it was a little funky with a northwest wind there. So we went to Beng Beng where the wind seemed to be blowing out of the north! It was looking a little big and high tide for Beng Beng, but we decided to get a few waves and let the wind figure out what it wanted to do. An hour or so later the winds picked up southeast so we retraced out path and checked out E-Bay. It was all right, overhead with only 2 guys out, but we passed. Bankvaults? No one out, but a little crumbly with the light southeast winds, so we pasted. (Our guys are already getting spoiled!) Then we checked out hideaways. Conditions there were perfect and overhead waves were reeling across the reef and nobody was out! But the tide was already getting a little low and I could see a lot of reef sticking up on the inside. I told the guests how shallow it was and how dangerous the reef was there, and most of them wisely decided to hang in the boat. But those open tubes and glassy, blue walls were too much to pass up for Jeff so he rallied Chris and the three of us went out. There were some epic waves. I have seen the carnage that Hideaways can dish out on days like that, but our two guests only knew that they were seeing some sick waves and they were charging! Ignorance is bliss as they were getting some great waves! The conditions were so good that we were making just about every wave, and we miraculously didn't pay much of a price when we didn't. Jeff said he got the backside tube of his life! I saw it from the back and that statement was easy to believe. After a couple of hours the tide was dead low and we decided to we had pressed our luck far enough and went back for lunch. Our second boat had left later than we did and headed straight for Kandui's. Yes, Amen was guiding that boat! Conditions had cleaned up since we had looked at it and it was going off! Waves were well overhead and winds were light offshore. I saw the pictures. SICK! Amen and Taylor got some absolutely mind blowing barrels. I'm sure we will get some of those pictures posted. If you can get a better barrel in the world than Kandui's, I would like to know where it is! In the afternoon we sent a boat to E-Bay. Waves were overhead, although it was a little shallow. But everybody came back with their skin intact. A late boat went back to Hideaways. The winds were a little side shore now and not as clean as before, but waves were still well overhead and only a few people were out. We managed to get in a few barrels and headed back as we watched the sunset. It was a pretty good day. Me and Amen heard the usual, “I got the wave of my life!” “I got the barrel of my life!” Blah, blah… Just another day in the office at Kandui Resort! Expecting even bigger surf tomorrow.

Winds were light and variable this morning. It was looking smaller out front, but our new swell is forecast to have quite a bit of west in it so me and Wetto jumped in the dingy to give Kandui's a look. If our southwest swell was starting to hit, we would see it on the more west facing reefs like Kandui's. But all we saw was dribbling waist high or so waves coming down the reef so we didn't come back to the resort with good news about the size of the swell, but we did have some good news. The winds were light out of the west over on the Kandui side, so Burgerworld could have some good waves. Both boats headed there and they were happy they did. Waves were a little over head and the conditions were clean. There were a couple of boats there, but everybody was mellow and they all had a great time. Burgerworld is one of those spots where the expert and the novice can both have a lot of fun, and our mixed group did just that. In the afternoon the winds were light southeast and we decided to give Beng Beng a check, hoping to see some sign of the new swell. Conditions were super clean there, but the swell was just barely starting to show. It was only chest to maybe shoulder high, but nobody was out and we ended up having a good time. Our other boat went to Nipusi. It was around head high, but our guys managed to get some good waves before sunset. Looking for bigger waves tomorrow.
