The swell was looking smaller this morning, but there was still plenty of water moving.  The winds were blowing moderately out of the southeast.  We headed straight for Hideaways to see if it was in a better mood today.  The conditions were really good when we got there and a bunch of guys just got out from their early morning session so the crowd factor was alright.  It was double overhead on the sets and the tide was as high as it was going to get today, but it wasn’t a very high tide so the reef was definitely a factor.  We all got some good ones before the wind got stronger and turned more south in the early afternoon.  I got some nice scraps on my last wave.  I guess Hideways had to let me know who was the boss after the nice waves I’d been getting the last few days!  Our other boat went to Beng Beng which was a little smaller than yesterday, and that’s a good thing, and they had it to themselves for most of their session.  Fun!  In the afternoon the wind was blowing strong out of the south, with maybe even a touch of west, so we hung close to the resort and surfed 4 Bobs until dark.  Expecting the swell to fade further tomorrow.

It was pretty windy this morning out of the east.  We weren’t in any hurry to go anywhere with it blowing like that, so we hung out for a while drinking coffee and eating omelets while we waited for it to calm down.  We probably didn’t get a boat out until after nine.  Our first stop was Hideaways.  It was bigger than yesterday, but it was still a little sick from the earlier strong winds so we moved on to E-Bay.  There were some sets, but it was a little crowed so we decided to go to Beng Beng and surf with only a few other guys out.  It was 3 or 4 feet overhead there, which is bigger than the optimal size for Beng Beng, but it was still fun.  On the way back, me and Tommy, our new surf guide, got dropped off at Hideaways which had cleaned up since the morning.  There was no one out and we found out why after a while.  There was a current pushing us in so we had to constantly paddle out and the waves were so thick it was almost impossible to paddle in on the sets which were well over double overhead!  I got one set wave and it felt like I was jumping off a two story building, then I got evaporated when I tried to straighten out!   It was a good sight when our boat came to pick us up.  The rest of the guys surfed 4 Bobs which was pretty big also and fairly clean.  There were plenty of sets and the guys had a lot of fun and they got to see a nice sunset from the lineup.  Looking at probably fading swell tomorrow.

The anticipated swell was showing this morning, but not as macking as we had expected.   We checked Kandui in the morning.  It was glassy enough, but had a weird bump on it so we pushed on to Hideaways.  The conditions were really good there with the south-southeast winds and it was a little bigger than yesterday.  Thick too with the long period swell!  Everybody got some sick ones before the tide got too low.  We headed back to the resort to fuel up on some chicken sandwitchs, then went and surfed Beng Beng at low tide.  One of our guests stayed behind and surfed overhead 4 Bobs by himself.  He was stoked!  We are hoping to see that swell increase more tomorrow.  This report has been brought to you by Ray Wilcoxen from Kandui Resort: September 19, 2007

The surf out front was looking a little smaller this morning in the pre dawn light as I was walking to the restaurant for my cup of joe.  We were hoping for calm winds this morning so we could surf Rifles again, but the wind was blowing pretty hard out of the southeast so that idea was out.  We went to Hideaways instead, expecting smaller surf on the west facing reefs like Hideaways, but to our surprise it was bigger than yesterday.  Sets were 3 or 4 feet overhead and there were a few bigger ones toward the end of our session.  Maybe our new swell was coming in a bit early?  Anyway, conditions were good and we surfed until the tide got a little low around midday.  In the afternoon the winds backed off a lot.  Most of the guests went back to Beng Beng where it was not quite as good as yesterday, but pretty fun with only a few guys out.  The rest surfed 4 Bobs which was pretty clean by then and only a couple of other guys out.  A big swell is on the horizon.  It might be hitting tomorrow.

Before the sun came up, we could tell by the sound of the waves that a new swell had arrived.  If there was any wind at all it was very light out of the north.  We quickly got out at Rifles to get some waves before the forecast southeast winds came up.  It was glassy out there and the waves were a couple of feet overhead and getting bigger.  We got a few in before the guys off of the boats showed up.  The wind started coming up not long after that so we decided to see what was going on elsewhere.  Hideaways was looking pretty small with the south swell, but Bankvaults had some waves.  It was a little bigger that yesterday with the occasional double overhead set rolling through.  The guys surfed until the wind came up even more and blew it out.  In the afternoon our boats both ended up at Beng Beng.  The winds were offshore, it was low tide (good for Beng Beng), and the waves were a little overhead.  The guys got some good waves and even some good, Beng Beng barrels!  They got back around dark.  We are keeping our streak of good waves alive this trip!  Hoping for more good surf tomorrow.

The winds were out of the southeast today, and is forecast to be that way for a week or so, and they were blowing pretty hard.  Most the group right now are natural foots and they were thinking they might not go right the intire trip with the forecast winds, but as we were checking out some small Hideaways  the winds really started to die so we headed over to take a look at Nipusi.   When we arrived, the winds had died even more and were coming more from the east.   It was plenty clean enough so we hit it and were glad we did.  There were some sets that were as big as doubleoverhead and it just got more clean as our session went on with the winds turning offshore (north).  Some guys eventually came out and we decided it was lunchtime.  In the afternoon, we headed back to Nipusi.  By that time Bankvaults had cleaned up enough to be good so we split up and surfed both spots.  Nipusi was as good or better than the morning.  Bankvaults was pretty good also and we were the only ones out.  It was 2 or 3 feet overhead on the sets and there were some decent barrels.  Those that stuck around the resort surfed some shoulder high 4 Bobs with no one else out.  This group’s trip is off to a good start with plenty of swell on the horizen.  Hoping for good conditions.

I’m back after a week in Jakarta getting a US visa for my wife Jenny.  Damn, I missed out on all he fun!  The island was rocking pretty good for a couple of days.  Everyone here said it was the biggest quake they have felt yet.  The resort faired pretty well.  Only a few tiles in the bathrooms and a couple of windows broke.  A miracle from what everybody here said.  I guess it was really shaking!  Didn’t feel a thing in Jakarta.  I always miss the fun!

It was raining steadily when we arrived this morning.  The wind was blowing from the southeast, but not that strongly.  The new group of guests (14 of them) settled in and let the rain die out.  By about midday we got a boat together and the new crew headed out for Beng Beng.  The conditions were nice over there.  It was glassy and the waves were head high or so with no one out.  They had it to themselves for an hour before a handful of guys joined them for the rest of the afternoon.  Those that stayed around the resort surfed some chest high 4 Bobs with no one else out.  Only one boat around right now.  Hope it stays that way!  Looking at about the size swell tomorrow.  Long range charts are off the hook with the Indian Ocean absolutely on fire for as far out as they can see.  Should be some good reports coming soon!

It was looking smaller in front of the resort this morning.  The wind was blowing out of the south, but not very strongly.  Everyone seemed content to hang out around the resort in the AM hours.  A few of the guys braved the blazing late morning sun to get a surf out at Karabat Left and 4 Bobs.  In the afternoon we sent a boat to Nipusi.  It had a case of cold Bintang on board in case the surf was too bad.  Nipusi was overhead on the sets and only two other guys were out.  It was a little bumpy with the south winds, but it was worth the go out and the crowd was cut down early by the cooler of beer in the boat.  They got back early enough to get some happy hour time in.  We got our new barbeque grill in and we put it to the test tonight.  It passed with flying colors.  Fish, chicken, and beef.  Yum!  Looking at probably an almost flat day tomorrow.

The swell was looking smaller today.  The winds were out of the south.  No one was in a big rush to look for surf after all the waves we got the last couple of days.  About mid morning we sent out a boat.  The tide was getting high enough to check Hideaways so we stopping in to check it.  We really didn’t expect to see much with the angle of the swell being so south and the swell dropping like it was, but sure enough there were some pretty good waves there.  It was shoulder to head high and the conditions were ok.  There were only a couple of other guys out so there were plenty of waves for everyone.  Eventually another boat showed up so we pulled anchor and went to check out Pitstop’s.  It was looking pretty flat so we went up on the beach and brought some drinks and snacks and just hung out.  It’s a really nice beach.  No one was out and we could see the occasional chest high set coming in once in a while.  After a while some of the guys got pulled out there and got pretty fun waves while the rest of us did some exploring and stuff.  By the time we left, the tide was getting pretty low so we thought we would give Beng Beng a look.  There was no one out there and the conditions were good so we went out for one more session.  It was about shoulder high and everybody got some fun ones.  We didn’t get back until after 5!  Looking at smaller surf tomorrow.

We were on Rifles alert this morning with a south swell and northwest winds predicted.  Sure enough the wind predictions were right so we were on Rifles early.  It was not as funky as yesterday, but it still had a wobble in it coming from the north.  The sets were a little bigger than yesterday too with the bigger sets going 4 feet overhead or so.  We had a nice session.  Most of the guys off of the boats in the area right now were a little afraid of the waves so we had it basically had all the set waves to ourselves.   Some of our guests went out to Karambat Left and 4 Bobs instead of Rifles and they were stoked as well with overhead waves and good conditions.  In the afternoon the tide was a little low for Rifles, but Karambat Left was, dare I say, epic.  Or about a close to epic as Karambat Left can get, and 4 Bobs was pretty darn good also.  Those that wanted to surf surfed there while the rest of the guys formed a peanut gallery on the restaurant deck and took full advantage of happy hour while watching Karambat Left, 4 Bobs, and John Candy’s go off.  Our guests had a really good day.  We are hoping for a repeat tomorrow.

The wind was not quite as strong this morning.  It was still out of the south though so we sent our first boat to Beng Beng for those of our guests that wanted a fun, playful wave, and we sent the second boat to Hideaways for the guys that wanted waves with a bit more push.  The swell was a little smaller than yesterday, but everyone was having fun.  The wind got more and more calm, then turned north and got stronger and stronger from that direction.  Both our boats pulled anchor and headed for Nipusi, arriving at nearly the same time.  Some of the guys went out to try and get some of the double overhead sets that were coming in, but the winds kept getting stronger, then the rain started coming down so we hightailed it back to the resort.  In the afternoon the rain backed down and the winds subsided some and turned northwest.  Some of the guests surfed overhead 4 Bobs and head high Karambat Left, while the rest headed to Rifles to give it a look.  It was a little weird out there.  It was a few feet overhead and the winds were offshore, but there were some big lumps coming in from the north that were making things interesting.  It was like peaks coming at you that distorted the barrel and made you work if you were going to come out.  Weird Rifles, but better than no Rifles!  It was a treat for everyone because the forecasts were all calling for southeast winds today and we had pretty much wrote off going right anywhere, especially Rifles.  I guess you never know around here.  We are hoping for good Rifles conditions tomorrow as a nice south swell is forecast to start hitting then.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s September already!   Time flies when you are getting waves!  The wind was still blowing hard this morning.  South.  It was looking bigger out front so we had our hopes up.  We checked Kandui’s first, even though it’s rarely worth the paddle if the wind is up.  It was surprisingly clean considering the strength of the wind.  We saw a couple of waves roll through that gave me a few butterflies.  It was doable, but barely.  We decided for Hideaways instead.  We rolled up and saw a piping set.  The guys jumped out and I put fins in my bigger board while I watched everyone getting nice waves, then I got out there myself and the sets stopped!  The waves were still fun, but only head high or so for the most part.  We were the only ones out so we surfed for hours.  Bigger sets started coming in late in our session, but the tide was getting pretty hazardous to our health so we pulled anchor and went to Beng Beng.  It was pretty fun there as well with no one out for the most part and overhead waves consistently coming in.  We surfed until the tide got a little full then headed back.  Fun day.  Hoping our swell will be about the same size tomorrow.
